They're Repeating across America What They Performed with Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and characteristic moments – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor stupidest, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. During the period of several weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing all observers his designs for an ornate dance hall twice the size of the White House and then began independently demolishing the East Wing to build it.

He has committed acts countless times more severe – the existing assessment of casualties due to his slashing to international aid amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and recently an analysis predicted his petroleum strategies would kill an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have risked – really, no previous leader would have conceived – independently wrecking large sections of the presidential residence in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of multiple the richest Americans, the majority of whom conduct transactions with federal agencies.

We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the world' into 'the meek shall die of cholera'

As confusing as it is to watch the leader attempt to overturn the old idea regarding democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who wouldn't consider it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics a near majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have witnessed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they converted a persona of compassion into an icon of hate who blesses exactly the harshness that he condemned in the Gospel; this has happened more gradually, over decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disturbing through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.

A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself

So let me first describe the Jesus that I grew up with, as conceptually Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and because the fastest-growing cadre within America might have little sense about him since they are non-believers or agnostics or nones. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; however I believe that exist valuable insights of significant worth in biblical accounts.

It is decidedly absolutely not the narrative of a powerful ruler arising; rather, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in a storage space, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to escape secret police. The baby grows up in simple surroundings, a working carpenter; his teaching concerns compassion for fellow humans, particularly for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and housing. Christ's response to hostility is to present the other cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a method to teach the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing is that if an individual takes your jacket you should give him your sweater too.

The apparent and clear truth that Christ from scripture advocates for a kind of profound affection centered on the needy has perpetually caused the Christian faith something of a scandalous religion: attractive to the populace, but due to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be contained. In the fifties it was contained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.

A Conflict for the Highest of Us

So I have been inspired to observe the persistent defiance to Trump develop during the previous year. It has been substantial consolation to help build the campaign that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired voters to turn out in significant amounts in interim political contests. We shall require to maintain it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners at every demonstration and appeals to the highest qualities within national heritage.

We will be questioned ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you accept these individuals and receive them or refuse?

America is best defended, in other words, by reference to the highest in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is best defended by reference to elements that cause it to be distinctive and beautiful, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In all circumstances does it mean pretending the most negative regarding America and religious tradition never occurred; it represents both modesty and faith, a blend that genuine US believers ought to accept.
