The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several major political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
